Shops and Hangers
The exterior appearance of a shop building is nice to have and a good strong frame is essential – these improved pole barn kits – post-frame buildings provide both – but the real test of a shop is the quality of the interior.
How easy is it to install a workbench? Can I build in a loft for storage easily and inexpensively? Can I insulate it easily & effectively, either when we build it, or sometime later? What about wall partitions? How about putting up a piece of peg-board, to hang stuff on? (Ever tried that with a steel-framed building?)

The answers are yes, yes, yes, yes and yes, even by an amateur. Wood framing is very easy to work with, for all those things – it’s that simple.
Are steel-framed buildings stronger? No, wood frames are at least as strong. In extremely heavy snow years here in northern Montana, many steel-framed buildings have collapsed – the wooden post-framed buildings survived.
Are steel-framed buildings safer, as far as fire is concerned? No – A wooden frame is not going to burst into flames, any more than a steel one. It’s always something in the interior that causes a fire.
There is one difference. Ask a fireman about this. They’ll likely tell you that if a steel framed building has a fire in it, get out promptly, because the roof beams will fail as soon as they get hot. The columns and beams in a post-frame will burn for a long time before they fail, providing time to remove contents, and also to extinguish a fire.
We’ve sold many improved pole barn kits – post-frames to farmers & ranchers who already had a steel-framed as their first shop. They chose a post-frame for the next and subsequent ones, because they see the advantages of the wood framing.
